ATM Marketplace: Prepaid cards and ATMs: a perfect pairing

Posted by | In the News | No Comments

From coupon deals with local merchants to open-loop prepaid ventures with the likes of Visa and MasterCard and a multi-merchant myGift card offering with Discover, ATM-dispensed giftcard provider Better ATM Services has come a long way in a relatively short time.

Todd Nuttall, CEO of Better ATM Services believes that the success of his product has everything to do with the natural compatibility of stored value products and value (i.e., cash) dispensing ATMs.

At the recent ATMIA US 2013 conference, Nutall sat down with ATM Marketplace to discuss results of a study indicating a strong correlation between ATM users and giftcard buyers. Read More

Fifty-six percent of credit union members purchase prepaid products, but only 5.6 percent purchase them from their credit union. With more than half going elsewhere to make their prepaid purchases, credit unions are only seeing 1 out of 20 of their customers buying their prepaid products. The data show consumer preferences on where to purchase their prepaid products boils down to convenience.

The Prepaid Press: Open Loop Predictions 2013

Posted by | In the News | No Comments

Gone are the days when prepaid open loop cards were considered glorified gift cards.

These days, consumers are learning that open loop cards can be linked to a multitude of banking-type features. On the flip side, retailers are learning how to turn these accounts into ongoing relationships with customers that allow them to flex their marketing muscle.

This combined awareness will make 2013 a year of healthy growth in the prepaid reloadable space. We talked to eight executives in the prepaid market, who predict that over the next few years in reloadable we’ll see a plethora of new features added to open loop cards that make them closely resemble bank accounts. This will inspire a more diverse user demographic, and bring banks and traditional credit card companies into the loop as prepaid providers.

We’ll also see open loop accounts go digital and mobile with reloadable virtual gift cards picking up speed and mobile applications playing a key role in gift card provisioning and payments. Both of these factors will contribute to a deeper integration between open loop cards and loyalty, incentive and other marketing programs. Finally, open loop cards will pick up speed in emerging markets abroad.

As these changes take shape, many in the industry believe 2013 will be a year of trial and initial adoption, while 2014 and 2015 lead to a tipping point and much greater uptake. Read More

PaymentsSource: Not All Prefer Open-Loop Prepaid, Better ATM Sees in Gift Card Test

Posted by | In the News | No Comments

Better ATM Services offers open-loop Visa prepaid cards through ATMs, but such one-size-fits-all cards don’t appeal to all consumers. To appeal to shoppers who prefer closed-loop gift cards, Better ATM is testing cards that work at nine merchants.

The myGift Discover-branded card is undergoing trials this quarter at Banner Federal Credit Union machines at 11 locations in Arizona and should become widely available in the first quarter of next year, says Todd Nuttall, Better ATM’s chief executive.

“You have a massive prepaid-type gift card market,” he says. “We know that half the people go for open-loop and half the people like to have particular brands.”

Consumers can redeem the cards in the test at Macy’s, Lowe’s, Express, Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill, Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine, Fleming’s and Cabela’s.

“A lot of people really do like a combination of key brands,” Nuttall says.

The card differs from the Visa-branded open-loop gift card that Mesa, Ariz.-based Better ATM introduced about a year ago. The earlier card was good anywhere Visa is accepted, unlike the myGift card which is redeemable only at certain stores. Read More
