Banner Federal Credit Union hopes the addition of  new card technology will help draw more members and nonmembers to its 11 ATMs.

The credit union has partnered with Better ATM Services to be the initial financial institution issuing the myGIFT card, a closed-loop gift card that carries the Discover brand.  The new gift card is made of a new type of material that is thin enough and flexible enough to be dispensed through an ATM’s cash dispensing mechanism but which is also firm enough to be used in a point of sale terminal. ATM Marketplace: NASA FCU ATMs Now Dispensing Visa Gift Cards

NASA Federal Credit Union has announced the introduction of ATM-dispensed Visa gift cards at select branches in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The new service, unveiled just in time for the holiday shopping season, allows credit union members to purchase gift cards right at the ATM with ease and security, the FCU said in its announcement.

The cards are the product of Better ATM Services, which owns the card format. The gift cards are dispensed directly from the cash tray and are accompanied by coupons that provide consumers with an added incentive for card purchase. Better ATM Services is testing a Discover-branded, ATM-dispensed prepaid gift card that consumers can use at any of nine retail chains and restaurants.

The myGift card is undergoing trials this quarter at Banner Federal Credit Union machines at 11 locations in Arizona and should become widely available in the first quarter of next year, says Todd Nuttall, Better ATM’s chief executive.

“You have a massive prepaid-type gift card market,” he says. “We know that half the people go for open-loop and half the people like to have particular brands.”

Consumers can redeem the cards in the test at Macy’s Lowe’s Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill, Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine, Fleming’s, Express and Cabela’s. Read More

Credit Union Times: Arizona Credit Union Partners in ATM Prepaid Card

The 10,000-member, $59 million Banner Federal Credit Union has partnered with Better ATM Services, a technology and prepaid card firm, in the rollout of what they call the first gift card that can be purchased from an ATM.

Dubbed the myGIFT card, carries the Discover brand and is made of a thin, durable material allowing cards to easily pass through an ATM’s cash mechanism and works like any other prepaid card, the Phoenix credit union said.

“Because prepaid cards have become the gift of choice for any occasion, we can now offer our members the flexibility to make one stop for all their banking and gift giving needs,” said Roger Swanson, president/CEO of Banner FCU. Read More

Selling Prepaid: Prepaid card dispensing ATM technology advances

On Oct. 23, 2012, Mesa, Ariz.-based ATM technology developerBetter ATM Services Inc.reported from the 2012 ATM, Debit & Prepaid Forum in Las Vegas that Visa Inc. had approved the company’s prepaid card ATM dispensing technology. Visa’s go ahead means all financial institutions (FIs) that issue Visa-branded payment cards in the United States can equip their ATMs with the technology to allow the machines to dispense Visa-branded prepaid cards, according to Better ATM Services Chief Executive Officer Todd L. Nuttall.

“Any bank that has a Visa relationship can now leverage ATM issuance of prepaid as part of its channel,” Nuttall said. “So it opens up literally every institution and prepaid program manager to extend their [prepaid] programs to the ATM.” Read More
